Infos:
Rock and roll has been a mainstay at Convention Hall since
the 1950s. On June 30, 1956, a concert by Frankie Lymon
& The Teenagers at the Hall ended prematurely when a
fistfight in the audience erupted into a full scale riot.
Three people were stabbed and then-Mayor Roland J. Hines
threatened a city-wide ban on rock and roll performances.
The ban never came to pass. In the mid-1960s, promoter Moe
Septee started booking rock acts at Convention Hall, including
some bands who would go on to achieve legendary status.
Between 1965 and 1975, Septee booked The Beach Boys, James
Brown, The Byrds, Ray Charles, The Dave Clark Five, The
Doors, The J. Geils Band, Herman’s Hermits, Janis Joplin,
Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, The Temptations, Pink
Floyd, and The Who, among many others. Led Zeppelin played
Convention Hall the evening of August 16, 1969, after their
manager, Peter Grant, rejected an invitation to Woodstock.
Joe Cocker opened for Led Zeppelin that night, before riding
up to Bethel, New York for his opening slot on the festival's
third and final (scheduled) day.
Concerts at Convention Hall continued even after Septee's
retirement. In the 1980s and 1990s, acts such as Peter Gabriel,
Elvis Costello, The Clash, No Doubt, and The Goo Goo Dolls
played the hall. During the 2000s, acts have included
Seether,
Papa Roach, 50 Cent, and Dream Theater. By this time, Convention
Hall had neither heating nor air conditioning.
Beginning in the late 1990s Convention Hall gained a strong
association with Bruce Springsteen, He held rehearsals for
upcoming tours there (with fans standing outside to get
early ideas of what the shows would bring), some ticketed
public rehearsal shows, and several December holiday shows
in conjunction with The Max Weinberg 7. The large lighted
sign on the top of Convention Hall now reads
"Greetings
from Asbury Park", in reference to Springsteen's 1973 debut
album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.

Infos:
The boardwalk in Asbury Park is in the process of revitalization
and has recently been connected to the neighboring town
of Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Asbury Park boasts a one mile
long Boardwalk which is located 60 miles south of New York
City, and about 90 minutes north of Atlantic City. Asbury
Park is the birth home of Bruce Springsteen, Danny Devito
and Jack Nicholson. Like the Phoenix rising from the
ashes,
Asbury Park is in the middle of a major redevelopment project
right now. The Queen of the northern Jersey Shore is about
to return to its former place of glory! Once known as the
"Crown Jewel" of the Jersey Shore, Asbury Park is really
going to try to make a comeback, and should be near finished
by 2009. Try to catch it while the old buildings still
exist,
like “Madame Marie’s” brightly painted fortune telling booth
made famous by Bruce Springsteen. The old Casino Pier is
closed. It once contained a skating rink, roller derby,
and amusements. The Casino has been a backdrop for the “Soprano’s”
TV show and in the movie “City by the Sea.” In the next
few years, the city promises shops, arcades, and goodie
stands. 2007 brings new excitement as the boardwalk undergoes
refurbishing. Several entrepreneurs have already opened
new shops on the boardwalk, taking advantage of rent concessions
to move into the old pavilions lining the boardwalk. On
the first Saturday of every month, Asbury Park's downtown
art galleries, home design studios, restaurants, antique
shops, and clothing boutiques remain open throughout the
evening, serving Hors d’œuvres and offering
entertainment,
to showcase the city's residential and commercial
resurgence.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN REMEMBERS MADAM MARIE
Back in the day when I was a fixture on the Asbury Park
boardwalk, I’d often stop and talk to Madam Marie as she
sat on her folding chair outside the Temple of Knowledge.
I’d sit across from her on the metal guard rail bordering
the beach, and watched as she led the day trippers into
the small back room where she would unlock a few of the
mysteries of their future. She always told me mine looked
pretty good – she was right. The world has lost enough mystery
as it is – we need our fortunetellers. We send our condolences
out to her family who’ve carried on her tradition. Over

One night we were playing in Asbury Park. I'd heard The
Bruce Springsteen Band was nearby at a club called The Student
Prince and on a break between sets I walked over there.
On-stage, Bruce used to tell different versions of this
story but I'm a Baptist, remember, so this is the truth.
A rainy, windy night it was, and when I opened the door
the whole thing flew off its hinges and blew away down the
street. The band were on-stage, but staring at me framed
in the doorway. And maybe that did make Bruce a little nervous
because I just said, "I want to play with your band," and
he said, "Sure, you do anything you want." The first song
we did was an early version of "Spirit In The Night". Bruce
and I looked at each other and didn't say anything, we just
knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other's
lives. He was what I'd been searching for. In one way he
was just a scrawny little kid. But he was a visionary. He
wanted to follow his dream. So from then on I was part of
history - Clarence Clemons Interview

The Upstage Club
/ Green Mermaid Cafe
Heimat von "Still Mill" und der "Bruce Springsteen
Band". Bruce Springsteen kannte die Inhaber Margarete und Tom
Potter und durfte die Lagerräume für Jamsessions nutzen. "The
Upstage Club" schloss im Jahre 1971 seine Pforten. "The

Gebäudes in der Cookman Avenue beheimatet.
Bruce Springsteen besuchte den Club nach 40 langen Jahren wieder. Am

Infos:
The Green
Mermaid Café was opened in downtown Asbury Park, NJ on the
corner of Cookman Ave. and Bond Ave. in the late 60’s as
a result of several factors. Tom and Margaret Potter had
a successful beauty shop business as well as numerous other
projects and ventures around town when a small adversity
struck their family. Tom developed an allergic reaction
to hair dye and other various chemicals common to the hairdresser
on his hands. This meant he had to find alternate means
of income.
Meanwhile his wife Margaret had a band known as The
Distractions.
They used to meet at the potter’s apartment above the beauty
shop to practice weekly. On a regular basis Tom and Margaret
had many friends and local musicians over to their home
for BBQ and jam sessions that lasted way into the early
mornings. The huge crowds that gathered at their home eventually
got to be to big for the apartment to handle and then Tom
realized what he could do. He soon spoke with the Owner/Operator
of the three-story building that housed the Thom McCann
shoe store, located next door to his apartment and beauty
shop at 700 Cookman Ave., about leasing the second floor
above the shoe store for a Café.
After squaring away all the legalities that night the band
met for rehearsal at he potter’s apartment. Tom gathered
everyone together including Margaret and asked them what
they thought about his idea for a café where folks could
come and listen to music and order coffee, teas, and other
various foods. Following a short conversation about the
pros and cons the group admitted that would be a great place
to have. Then as Distractions Band member Joe Petillo tells
us “ Tom, said:’ Well rehearsal is cancelled for tonight!
I just signed the lease and we are all gonna go next door
and paint, I already have all the paint, brushes and ladders
ready!!’” And that was the beginning of THE GREEN MERMAID
CAFÉ. As the popularity spread the second floor soon became
too small without sufficient dancing room. It bled over
to the leasing of and expansion into the third floor and
a whole new section was born dedicated to hardcore ROCK
AND ROLL and DANCING! That was the birth of THE UPSTAGE
CLUB! AND THE REST IS HISTORY!

Infos:
I finally got to see the inside of The Upstage in Asbury Park.
For years I had looked up at the outside of the building at 702 Cookman Avenue and wondered what it was like behind those
walls.
One the second and third floor was where Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny Lyon, Steve Van Zandt, Vini Lopez and many others had gotten their musical start in Asbury Park in the late 1960s.
As a child, I passed by the building on the southwest corner of Bond Street and Cookman Avenue many
times, my mother telling me "that's where the hippies hang out" when we were on shopping trips to Asbury Park.
It was about 10 years later that I learned who those "hippies" were and that this building had an historical
importance.
The Upstage closed in 1971 and the second and third floors of 702 Cookman Avenue have been pretty much sealed off from public view ever
since.
Different shoe stores, under a few different names, operated on the frist floor. . But the second and third floors were shut off from the rest of the
world.
I've taken many tour groups to the building. We've stood on the outside and I told them this is where Bruce Springsteen really started in Asbury Park, not at the Stone Pony (it didn't open until 1974). This was where Bruce met future bandmates Danny
Federici, Garry Tallent, Vini Lopez, David Sancious and Southside Johnny. He had met Steve Van Zandt in
Middletown, but those two spent many a night playing together here at the
Upstage.
On the second floor was the Green Mermaid cafe. The music was mainly on the third floor where Bruce jammed many
nights. I have seen so many pictures of Bruce, Southsdie, Van Zandt,
Federici, Lopez and others playing at what was known as
"Upstage University" where musicians jammed until 5 a.m..
But I never had the opportunity to go inside the building. A few friends did in the late 1990s, paying the then-owner of the first-floor shoe store $100 each to see what was
inside. They told me stories of the psychedelic paintings and bright murals still on the wall and the stage still there on the third
fllor. They showed me pictures they took.
I finally got the opportunity to see the Upstage last week thanks to Richard Yorkowitz who bought the building last year and hopes to open it up once again so a new generation can hear music in the same spot where so much history was
made.
I climb up the stairs. I think about a 19-year-old Springsteen walking up these same steps in 1968 just trying to prove himself to the local
musicians. There's still posters and paintings on the wall, some look untouched in 40
years.
Last week on E Street Radio on Sirius Satellite Radio, I heard David Sancious tell a story how he met Bruce for the first time right on these very
stairs.
I take a look at the second floor, where the cafe was. It looks like someone just turned the lights off, closed the door in 1971 and just opened that door again
today.
I start to get chills as I climb to the third floor. This is where is all
happened.
I look in, ahh, the stage is on the Cookman Avenue side, I always thought it was the other
direction. I learned something new.
Sure, there's some weather and time releated damage, but you can almost the ghots of the music
playing.
I just stand there and take it all in. This is where it happened from m1968 to 1971. Right
here. If this building didn't exist, would we Know Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny as they are
today?
Yorkowitz is working hard to open up the Upstage again. He would like to have it as a music venue with a restaurant but is having resistance from some in Asbury Park.
That's really too bad and unforuntate.
This is a historical site an absolute must-see stop on any Bruce Springsteen tour. This is our version of the Cavern Club where, the Beatles started out in Liverpool.
I hope Richard is successful and can open up the Upstage again. Then so many others can have the chance that I
did, to really see where it all happened
