"'Darkness' was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble...But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after 'Born To Run' and before the collection of songs that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' became."
Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Brokenhearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. 'The Promise' is simply a great listening experience."

Die offizielle (deutsche) Pressemeldung vom 8. September 2010:

"The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story" erscheint am 12. November

On The Edge Of Town"-Sessions entstanden waren.

Fans of Bruce Springsteen's 1978 album 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' will be overjoyed by the details of the rock legend's forthcoming box set, 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story.' According to Springsteen's official website, the sprawling effort will boast three CDs, three DVDs and an 80-page notebook facsimile of Bruce's original notes from the album's sessions. An alternate edition, known simply as 'The Promise,' will only include the project's 21 unheard complete songs - THE SPINNER

For Bruce Springsteen fans, Nov. 16 is shaping up as a banner day. That’s when Columbia Records will release "The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story,” a box set focusing on what many Springsteen aficionados consider his most vital period as a recording and touring artist.
"Darkness" marked the centerpiece of a particularly prolific era for Springsteen, with more than 70 songs in play for the eventual 10-song album. Some of the outtakes made it on to later albums, but a few are surfacing only now, including "Save My Love for You," which is being streamed on Springsteen's Web site. It's the type of song that could've been a career-starter for many artists, but for Springsteen it was just another day in the studio - CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Sometimes it gets lost in the E Street shuffle. But real fans know: "Darkness on the Edge of Town" is essential Bruce Springsteen. The 1978 album had no major hits, but it did much to cement the mythology of the Boss. Here was a voice for blue-collar bruisers, working class kids kicked around by the grown-up world, urban romantics, street-racers, ordinary Joes with extraordinary grievances. It also boasted some of Springsteen's hardest-rocking numbers: body-slamming "Adam Raised a Cain," dramatic "Candy's Room," swaggering "Prove it All Night." - THE STAR LEDGER

More than three decades after Bruce Springsteen first advised us that there’s a spot out ’neath Abram’s Bridge and a darkness on the edge of town, you would think that maybe circumstances had changed. But no: the darkness remains on the edge of town, and yet somehow it’s gotten bigger. On Thursday Columbia Records said it was preparing two releases commemorating Mr. Springsteen’s 1978 album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town,” and containing rare materials from its recording sessions. On Nov. 16, the label will put out "The Promise: The ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ Story,” a boxed set containing three CDs and three DVDs that include a remastered version of the album, 21 previously unreleased songs, a 1978 concert by Mr. Springsteen in Houston and a documentary film about the album. On Nov. 14 Columbia will also release a two-disc set called "The Promise” that contains the previously unheard songs from the album. - THE NEW YORK TIMES

Mit dem Box-Set "The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story" (Sony) werden sie am 12. November der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. - DER STANDARD
